Frequently Asked Questions about Medicare

Medicare is our country’s health insurance program for people age 65 or older. You may also qualify if you have permanent kidney failure or receive Disability benefits.

It’s important to sign up promptly to avoid gaps in coverage or late enrollment penalties. Most people sign up for Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) when they are first eligible, typically at age 65.

If you’re already covered through an employer group health plan, it might make sense to sign up for Medicare later or delay Part B.

Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. If you don’t qualify, you may need to pay a monthly premium. Part B has a monthly premium that varies based on your income.
